Sunday, September 18, 2016, during the final class 'F1 Racer' air races in Reno, in the state of Nevada, Thom Richard was aligned on the ground at the controls of his plane named "Hot Stuff" when his plane experienced an engine failure at the time of starting it. Stuck in the middle of the track, he immediately reported the problem to the marshals who immediately waved red flags. Unfortunately, a competitor who was in the back did not see the plane down and it came crashing at full speed with its left wing, while Thom Richard held the awning of his open cockpit to indicate that he was out of the race. The impact was extremely violent and both planes were heavily damaged. Luckily, Thom Richard had only a broken right hand and the second pilot was not injured.
